The Beauty of Highgate Cemetery

October 31, 2012

It may seem like a strange title calling a cemetery something of beauty but Highgate has some features that are quite stunning. One of approximately 48 cemeteries in London, Highgate is so pretty and historic that it is considered a nature reserve as well as being Grade I listed.

Located in north London, some of the most notable of the 170,000 residents of Highgate Cemetery are Karl Marx, George Eliot, Michael Faraday, Jeremy Beadle, and Ralph Miliband (father of Ed Miliband, current Labour Party leader.) The cemetery which opened in 1839 is divided into two sections: east and west.

Highgate Cemetery is still a working cemetery conducting burials weekly, however daily tours of the cemetery are available. Advanced booking is recommended. You can find more information by visiting the Highgate Cemetery website.

Highgate Cemetery is totally on my list for my next trip to England. I really want to see the graves of Dante Gabriel Rosetti and his wife, Elizabeth Siddal.
