If you’re looking for somewhere to get away, it’s quite easy to forget about some of the places on your own doorstep. Yet Britain has a wonderful variety of locations worth visiting. Whilst it’s easy to think of London and the various major cities, there are also some slightly more quiet opportunities up north.
This includes the likes of Harrogate, a humble spar town located just inside of North Yorkshire. Combining the best of cities and the country side, there are few places as relaxing and refreshing as Harrogate.
In addition to this, it’s also relatively affordable. Being found in the countryside means you can make the most of cheap Harrogate train tickets, and the various public attractions are all either cheap or free.
Like many spa towns in the north, Harrogate has a unique charm and appeal. From the simple architecture to the northern atmosphere, Harrogate is a surprisingly vibrant and lively place for its size.
That said, if you want actual attractions, Harrogate is famous for its spa waters and various gardens, notably the RHS Harlow Carr and Crescent Gardens. Throw in some shopping opportunities and you have a lot to offer. If you want a fun, yet relaxing week or weekend away, Harrogate can let you do everything at a pace that suits you.
Additionally, there are some things that you can’t just buy or find as an attraction. Situated in North Yorkshire, Harrogate is not without its friendly and warm northern atmosphere. From the accents to the friendly locals, there’s a certain charm that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Of course, if this sounds like your kind of thing and you want to visit, you need to know your options when getting there. Depending on where you’re coming from, driving may be expensive and exhaustive. This often leaves trains as your main, and best, form of transport.
If you’re planning ahead, you can make further savings by booking in advance. East Coast Rail have regular services up to Harrogate, booking in advance can help earn you a big discount.
Finally, remember to book accommodation in advance. Harrogate is a popular town, so it helps to make sure you have somewhere to stay. That said, the popularity has given way to decent competition, so you’ll find plenty of affordable hotels and Bed and Breakfasts to suit anyone’s needs.

Lovely!
I’ve visited Harrogate back in 1998! It was fabulous, the gardens surreal. We sat in a local pub answering Beatles’ trivia. It was twenty four hours of wonderful respite. Our tour guide, Michelle Burkhill, was a doll. Wish I could say hello to her again.
