Downton Abbey Season 3 Starts Sunday on PBS

With season three of Downton Abbey set to commence on January 6 on PBS, the agony of the wait for us in America will finally be over. The wait was perhaps compounded by the fact that season three just ended in its native Britain with the two-hour Christmas finale. American fans will be happy to know, however, that talks are supposedly in the works to air Downton in America closer to its original British air dates.

It has been difficult to navigate the social media waters and not come across too many spoilers for season three. Several websites (including the official Downton Abbey Facebook page: have very graciously requested it’s UK fans to not divulge plot points in lieu of the show’s American fans. Talk about show camaraderie!

Season three opens in the spring of 1920 at the culmination of WWI. With season two ending in Mary’s acceptance of Matthew’s proposal of marriage, we can only imagine what the wedding will be: lavish, in an attempt to revitalize the pre-war glamour the radiated throughout Downton, or simple and understated, with reverie to the difficult times the nation and its people just experienced? Will Mary’s sister, newly married Lady Sybil, make it to the wedding from her new home in Dublin?

Also on the minds of fans is the fate of Mr. Bates. The question seems to be not whether Mr. Bates killed his wife (we all know he didn’t, right?) but who actually did. Theories abound and I really just want Bates and Anna to live happily ever after, more so than even Matthew and Mary! (Hey, I’ve got a soft spot for the underdog).

There is a silver lining, however, and that is the addition of none other than veteran actor, Shirley MacLaine, who plays Martha Levinson, mother of the Countess of Grantham. One of my personal favorites of the show is Maggie Smith and I simply can’t wait to experience the banter between these two legends.

Many of our burning questions will be answered in season three, but given the show’s reputation, only more intrigue and situations are bound to arise. As you count down the hours until 9 o’clock Sunday night, enjoy this preview of the new season from Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery.

It’s been almost impossible to avoid spoilers. I was on the Daily Telegraph site, reading about Amazon and author reviews… and right there, on the same page, was a headline which gave away a key part of the Christmas special which aired in the UK.
Anyway, they do say that anticipation is a large part of enjoyment!
