With season three of Downton Abbey set to commence on January 6 on PBS, the agony of the wait for us in America will finally be over. The wait was perhaps compounded by the fact that season three just ended in its native Britain with the two-hour Christmas finale. American fans will be happy to know, however, that talks are supposedly in the works to air Downton in America closer to its original British air dates.
It has been difficult to navigate the social media waters and not come across too many spoilers for season three. Several websites (including the official Downton Abbey Facebook page: facebook.com/DowntonAbbey) have very graciously requested it’s UK fans to not divulge plot points in lieu of the show’s American fans. Talk about show camaraderie!
Season three opens in the spring of 1920 at the culmination of WWI. With season two ending in Mary’s acceptance of Matthew’s proposal of marriage, we can only imagine what the wedding will be: lavish, in an attempt to revitalize the pre-war glamour the radiated throughout Downton, or simple and understated, with reverie to the difficult times the nation and its people just experienced? Will Mary’s sister, newly married Lady Sybil, make it to the wedding from her new home in Dublin?
There is a silver lining, however, and that is the addition of none other than veteran actor, Shirley MacLaine, who plays Martha Levinson, mother of the Countess of Grantham. One of my personal favorites of the show is Maggie Smith and I simply can’t wait to experience the banter between these two legends.
