When Doctor Who Made Me Cry
My favorite artist has always been Vincent Van Gogh, not just for his spectacular works but for his life story as well. He led a tortured existence and was quite under appreciated during his time. It is now believed that Vincent was bi-polar so little wonder his works are colored with heavy, violent strokes of seemingly both joy and despair. Whatever you believe about Vincent, it is now true that he is universally recognized as one of the greatest artists who ever lived.
A recent episode of the new Doctor Who was like a love letter to the man and artist. Thanks to the Tardis, we got to visit Van Gogh (played by Tony Curran) during his time as a struggling artist. Not surprisingly, this brilliant, brilliant episode was written by the even more brilliant Richard Curtis (Love, Actually).
One of my favorite scenes was the “Starry, Starry Night” scene.
But it was this scene that brought me to tears. Amazing!

Brilliant wasn’t it? It’s the only episode I have recorded in HD and locked into my Sky+ player – yeah we ALL cried.

I can see why. Seriously the best episode this series and maybe even the best DW episode I’ve ever watched. But maybe I’m biased.

Oh me too!!! I especially loved that they took Vincent forward and let him hear the curator telling them how amazing Vincent was, and later when the painting had “For Amy” on the vase!!! Definitely one of the most emotional episodes they’ve done. I loved it

I loved that episode. Van Gogh has always been one of my favorites as well. This episode, and those scenes, were delightful and very touching.

When I started watching Doctor Who with my teenaged son, I didn’t ever think I’d be crying on the couch on a Saturday night. That episode was beautiful. The whole season has been quite a ride.

I agree with you completely! I think we all wish that he would somehow have known how cherished his work would end up being. Lots of tissues used at our house that day!

Tell me about it! I’ve been so impressed with this series, and that’s saying something considering how much I loved David Tennant. Amy Pond has really made it for me this season though (love Matt Smith of course) I think Amy is my favourite companion by far. This episode was particularly good…Tony Curran did a wonderful job….made me read up a lot more on Van Gogh which has to be a good thing! I loved that scene too…I had to download that song too, is just great! x

This episode was a great example of what makes Doctor Who a great show. It, to me, is a show that can do it all: sci fi obviously, but great drama, great acting, and wonderful and moving storylines that can move you. How many shows can show this kind of depth and range? For me, none that can do it this consistently. I love how you can cry one minute and be laughing the next. And if I may say so, Matt Smith is certainly proven himself to be a worthy person to pick up the sonic screwdriver.

The writing for Dr Who, since its revival a few years back, has been incredible. And to create characters and stories that captivate both adults and children – that is a rare talent. I still love the Dr Who episodes from the 70s – that’s what I grew up with – but the modern version is far superior.
That episode was especially moving.

Oh I always cry at Dr Who, it’s a standing joke here my husband and daughter think it’s hysterical – the meanies! But that Vincent episode at the end in the museum when Dr Black describes his impact – just had me totally. I cried like a baby – great episode

You know, I haven’t even seen the 11th doctor yet. I still need to finish watching season 4…
