Top 10 British Cover Songs
Welcome to Music Monday!
Today I’m being featured over at The Top 10 Blog and I hope you’ll stop in and say hello.
As the name suggests, The Top 10 Blog is a blog about lists and I was pleased to be invited to share mine: The Top 10 British Cover Songs.
You’ll have to visit The Top 10 Blog to see my list and then come back here to see which songs failed to make the cut.
Since the British and rock n’ roll go together like fish n’ chips, this post was a breeze to write and I couldn’t stop at just ten.

My favorite British cover songs continued:
11. Not Fade Away – The Rolling Stones – Originally released by Buddy Holly, this cover version by the Stones went to #3 on the UK charts back in 1964.
12. Rock N Roll Music – The Beatles - The Fab Four did quite a few cover songs during their career. Besides this Chuck Berry cover, they remade “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” by Larry Williams, “Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes, “Chains” by The Cookies, “Honey Don’t” by Carl Perkins, and “Long Tall Sally” by Little Richard.
13. Oh Girl – Paul Young – I think Paul Young did a fair job of covering this classic tune by The Chi-Lites but it didn’t chart so well, only reaching #25 in the UK and #8 in the U.S.
14. A Groovy Kind of Love – The Mindbenders – This is one of those songs that’s still playing in your head hours after you’ve heard it on the radio. I prefer the Mindbenders’ version which was released in 1965 and went to #2 in the UK, but it was Phil Collins who took it to #1 in 1988.
15. Reason to Believe- Rod Stewart – This song was written by folksinger Tom Hardin and covered by nearly two dozens artists with Rod Stewart’s version coming out of top. It went to #1 in 1971.
16. Keep Me Hanging On – Kim Wilde – This is my favorite Supremes song and I think Kim Wilde did a bang up job of covering it. Probably explains why I hear this version played now more than the original.
17. Hush – Deep Purple – This was Deep Purple’s biggest hit but it wasn’t theirs, it was written for Billy Joe Royal. Still, Deep Purple liked the song so much they released it a second time in 1988, twenty years after they first covered it. Watch this performance of “Hush.” You gotta love that hair, and the clothes. Oh my!
18. Air That I Breathe – The Hollies – This cover version of an Albert Hammond song was the Hollies’ last major hit. Also recorded by Phil Medley, the Hollies version is the most well known and my favorite Hollies song. It’s part of the soundtrack of my youth.
19. Stand by Me – John Lennon – Lennon made it to the top 20 with his rendition of this Ben E. King classic. It was his last hit before going on his now infamous 5 year hiatus.
20. I Only Want to be with You – Bay City Rollers - Ah, the boys in tartan! You gotta love ‘em. I sure did and so did a lot of other teenage girls. These lads had a three year run where they did quite well in the charts with two #1′s in the UK and a #1 hit in the U.S. with “Saturday Night.” Their version of Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want To Be With You” was their last hit song, reaching #4 in the UK.
