BBC:Yellowstone DVD Giveaway
This Autumn, PBS in America aired a six-part series by Ken Burns on the nation’s national parks. It mostly focused on the men and history behind what has been called America’s “best idea”. For me, it was a bit dry and didn’t focus enough on the most important part of these parks, which are the beautiful, and sometimes threatened animal species. Then in late September, BBC DVD released BBC:Yellowstone, which originally aired in Britain in March 2009 and in America on Animal Planet as Yellowstone: Battle for Life. I completely missed the original airing but it was suggested to me by someone online, so I checked it out.
BBC: Yellowstone follows a year in the life of this national treasure, focusing on its wildlife and how it adapts to the changing seasons in one of the harshest environments in the world. The series is split into three 50-minute episodes called “Winter”, “Summer” and “Autumn” and is narrated by Peter Firth. BBC Yellowstone turned out to be the highest rated natural history documentary to appear on the BBC in the last five years.

This documentary on Yellowstone is probably the most beautiful I have ever seen and one of the most stunning documentaries I’ve ever watched. The cinematography is breath-taking, and the mood of the documentary is serene. It felt as though I was spying in on a world that exists completely separate from the rest of us and only a special few ever witness. I appreciated Peter Firth’s quiet narration compared to that of the Ken Burns series, where there seemed to be a lot more chatter and not enough quiet contemplation on the beauty of the area.

I would like to share this series with my American followers, just in time for Christmas. I think this will make a great stocking stuffer and I’m giving away a copy to three lucky winners.
