Flashback Friday
In contrast to my New Music Monday posts, I thought I would start a series of occasional posts on British music from days gone by, with an appreciation that not everyone likes new music. (But then again, what is new today becomes classic rock tomorrow, right?)
On Wednesday, I posted a photo of myself and Mummsy in Scotland during the 1980′s. I arrived in Britain in January 1988 and left on January 1, 1991. It was in the next two or three years that grunge music took hold – a backlash against 80′s pop and hair bands. Thankfully, I missed the hair band phenomena that dominated American music in the late 80′s. (I am, however, familiar with it thanks to my hair band loving husband who has seen Guns N’ Roses and Poison countless times.) Instead, I got to enjoy some great British music acts, some which, admittedly, I was none too fond of at the time, but now look back on with sentimentality. I thought music couldn’t get much worse than some of these songs, but I was wrong, and now look back on them as the sounds of a more simpler time. I would welcome these days back in a heartbeat.
Below are some of the tunes that take me right back to the late 80′s. These are songs that may not have been released during those years but ones I heard over and over again on English radio or in dance clubs and became some of my favorites.
Erasure – A Little Respect

The Smiths – Panic
(I was/am mad about The Smiths.)
Lisa Stanfield – All Around The World
(This was a MASSIVE hit in the U.K. but I have only heard it on U.S. radio once or twice.)
Seal – Killer
The Proclaimers – I’m On My Way
(With a Glaswegian in residence, I couldn’t help but love this one.)
Soul II Soul – Back To Life
(Another huge hit in the U.K.)
The Stone Roses – Fools Gold
(Still mad about them as well.)
