Fortysomething Giveaway

Most Americans only recognize Hugh Laurie as Dr. House but Anglophiles like us are keenly aware of his distinguished career in Britain as a much beloved comedian, actor, writer and musician. We know him as part of the comic duo Fry and Laurie, Wooster to Stephen Fry’s Jeeves, and my personal favourite, The Prince Regent (George IV) to Edmund Blackadder. His film roles include Sense and Sensibility (1995), 101 Dalmations with Emma Thompson and the three Stuart Little films.

Prior to Laurie making his American prime time debut as Dr. House, he developed his doctor playing skills in a 2003 British sitcom called Fortysomething. Laurie plays Paul Slippery, a GP with his own set of ailments, including a wife he suspects of cheating (Anna Chancellor from Four Weddings and a Funeral) and three sons who mock him endlessly. He hears voices in his head, can’t remember where his wife works or the last time they had sex. Is he having a midlife crisis?

Fortysomething is adapted from a novel by Nigel Williams, a BAFTA and Emmy award winning writer and includes a special appearance by Stephen Fry. I was lucky enough to be contacted by Acorn Media, a distributor of British DVDs in America, and asked to review the show. I’m happy to tell you that Fortysomething was good fun. I found Paul Slippery to be an endearing character and being a fortysomething myself, one I could clearly identify with. Many of the laugh out loud moments for me involved the three boys (especially Edwin, the youngest, whom some may recognize from The Tudors); they are constantly taking the mick where Dad’s concerned. Fortysomething is an unexpected gem in Laurie’s long career and I’ll think you’ll enjoy it too.

If you would like to see Fortysomething, now is your chance. Acorn Media is giving away a copy of the DVD to three lucky readers here at Smitten.
