British Icon: The English Bulldog
Britain is a nation of dog lovers so it’s not surprising that one might be chosen as a national icon. The English Bulldog symbolizes what it means to be British: strong, tenacious and unshakably loyal. But the breed standard has recently come under threat from the most unlikely of sources. A documentary which aired in Britain this summer exposed what it called abusive breeding practices which leaves bulldogs unable to reproduce and give birth naturally. As a result the British Kennel Club is now revising its standards for the breed which it claims is in effort to protect the health of the breed. But critics say this revision will change the look of the breed so much that it will no longer resemble the dog they know and love. Hopefully this won’t be the case but for now we can still celebrate this most beloved of icons.
